In 1654, a group of Jews escaped from the Portuguese Inquisition in Recife, Brazil and landed in Manhattan, which was then the Dutch settlement of New- Amsterdam. It was the same anti-Semitic Inquisition that caused their ancestors to flee from Spain in 1492, and Portugal in 1497. Peter Stuyvesant, Governor of New Amsterdam (later known as New York) was no friend of the Jews, but the “Dutch West India Company,” the owner of the colony, ordered that the small group be allowed to remain.

This year Purim falls on FEBRUARY 28. Events take place in the Persian Empire during the reign of King Ahasuerus (485-465 B.C.E) as described in the Book of Esther (The Megilah)
Prime Minister, Haman, planned for the eradication of all the Jews of the Persian-Empire. Haman cast lots to determine the day of the massacre; the lots fell on the 13th day of Adar. Mordechai, uncle of Esther, the queen, thwarted Haman’s plot through Esther.
